Cutting 2 cm thick tiles - Myth of tile thickness

The thicker the tile, the harder it is to cut? From a thickness of 2 cm nothing works anymore? We dispel the myth.

 Difficulty: Medium | Costs about 20-50 euros | Workload : approx. 5-20min

We want to clear up the myth of cutting tiles from a thickness of 2 cm! For reasons that are inexplicable to us, many users keep asking whether tile cutting discs are capable of cutting 2 cm thick tiles.

The short answer is yes, of course our diamond cutting discs can cut them.

1. Why is the myth of thick tiles and potential problems so persistent?

In the DIY store, in the hardware store or in a tile studio, you will usually find out about the properties, durability, combinations and visual aspects of tile products such as:

  • wall tiles
  • floor tiles
  • Terrace tiles made of ceramic, fine stoneware and much more.

best advice.

However, some sellers seem to point out again and again that cutting tiles from a thickness of 2 cm can be problematic.

2. 2 cm thick tiles can only be "cut" with a tile cutter and not with a tile cutting disc!

Tile cutters are mechanical devices that use pressure to break a tile. Depending on the brand and quality, these can only exert a small amount of pressure on the tile.

Our experience shows: This means that the thicker the tile, the higher the pressure exerted must be in order to be able to break the tile. However, this has nothing to do with cutting tiles with an angle grinder or a wet cutter !

A practical example: Here we show our customers how they can cut 2 cm thick porcelain stoneware or granite terrace slabs with a wet cutting table .

2.3 The maximum cutting height of a tile is determined by the size of the tile cutting disc when using diamond cutting discs

As you probably already know, a 125 mm diameter cutting disc is suitable for an angle grinder. This means that it can in principle guarantee a maximum cutting height of 12.5 cm.

Good to know: However, with an angle grinder, the maximum cutting height must take into account the mount of the diamond cutting disc.

This means that a 125 mm diamond cutting disc can now cut significantly fewer high tiles. In our experience, this reduced height is now 4.5 cm with the use of an M14 quick release nut.

get cut. It only depends on the personal inclination, the available machines and tools.

4. Conclusion - 2cm thick tiles can often be cut like any other tile.

Diamond blades are very clearly capable of cutting 2cm thick tiles. The maximum depth of cut is determined by the diamond blade diameter minus the area required to mount the blade.

5. Frequently asked questions when cutting 2cm thick terrace slabs

1. The thicker the tile, the harder it is to cut? From a thickness of 2 cm nothing works anymore?

No, that's a myth. With suitable tools such as diamond cutting discs, tiles with a thickness of 2 cm or more can also be cut without any problems.

2. Can 2 cm thick tiles be cut with a tile cutter?

Tile cutters are mechanical devices for breaking tiles and can be less effective with thicker tiles due to the pressure required. Machines such as angle grinders or tile table saws are recommended for cutting 2 cm thick tiles.

3. How does diamond blade size affect cutting thick tiles?

The maximum cutting height of a tile is determined by the diameter of the diamond cutting disc.
